The grievances of the disaffected healthcare worker July 4, 2007

Ace commented on some Yahoo AP rip about the backgrounds of the Muslim terrorists who attemped bombings in London and Glasgow.  The media is struggling mightily to preserve the meta-narrative, that terrorists are misguided individuals, poor, have struggled against some injustice or harsh treatment.  This is not easy to do when the ringleader is a so-called “brilliant” neurologist.  The writer of this particular AP report speaks of the widely diverse backgrounds of the group, as if writing the words could make it so.

Personally I think the writer should play up the bit about them all working in Britain’s NHS.  Gotta be some real grievances in that mess.

UPDATE: Today’s round up at Hot Air, including the Brits cancelling plans to share intel with Muslim leaders before raids.

I’m shocked.

Brits thwart attempted bombing in Picadilly Circus June 29, 2007

Posted by daveintexas in Current Events, terrorist hemorrhoids.

Using luck.

No intel.  No warning.  No infiltration of a terrorist cell or intercepted communications.  They found this thing because they were lucky.  A car loaded with explosive gas cylinders and nails parked next to The Haymarket.  An ambulance crew noticed smoke coming from the car, and called it in.

Picadilly is crowded with shops and restaurants.  Even at 1:30 in the morning, it’s a busy place.

This was weird:

Early photographs of the silver Mercedes showed a canister, bearing the words “patio gas,” indicating it was propane gas, next to the car. The back door was open with blankets spilling out.

Tank of propane next to the car, and an open back door?   WTF?

Doesn’t make sense.  But that doesn’t erase how potentially lethal this thing was.

UPDATE:  ace tells me they apparently crashed the car and screwed up the detonator, and the moron terrorist might have been trying to set it off with fire.  His update is here, and HotAir has it too.  Poosibly a home grown moron who didn’t go to AQ bomb school.  Luck.

Luck is not a strategy for dealing with terrorism.  Oh, and Circus is Latin for circle.

I knew somebody would want to know that.

UPDATE 2:  They found another one.  And the first car had two cell phone detonators, both numbers called twice.

He’s right.

Shipping arms into Iraq.  Training enemy combatants on their soil to go to Iraq and engage our forces.

Isn’t that reason enough?

It is to me.

Editor’s note:  I have no idea who wrote this.  It’s probably old.  Still, it’s funny to me that somewhere, some guy, it had to be a guy, came up with happy messages on the packaging.

Dear Mr. (redacted),

I have been a loyal user of your Always maxi pads for over 20 years, and I
appreciate many of their features. Why, without the LeakGuard CoreT or
Dri-WeaveT absorbency, I’d probably never go horseback riding or salsa
dancing, and I’d certainly steer clear of running up and down the beach in
tight, white shorts. But my favorite feature has to be your revolutionary
Flexi-Wings. Kudos on being the only company smart enough to realize how
crucial it is that maxi pads be aerodynamic. I can’t tell you how safe
and secure I feel each month knowing there’s a little F-16 in my pants.

Where has Dave been? April 2, 2007

Recovering from one of the worst stomach illnesses I’ve had years.  Dear Lord that was awful.

Following an interesting legal question in which a woman lies to her husband about being raped and abducted, and as the innocent man is driving with his wife, he shoots and kills him.  Interesting because she has now been charged with a crime, and he has not (and presumably will not).

And in the Gopher State, big battle brewing over which state fair ride should be declared the Official Fair Ride of Minnesota.  Apparently James Lileks has cast his lot with the People’s Front of Tilt A Whirl and the splitters are having at him.

You see what stupid cold weather does to people?

I’m off for a 7Up and some dry toast.  Bye!

Crawford Peace House loses corp status with State of Texas March 29, 2007

Former member calling for investigation, citing massive donations, no accounting of receipts or expenses.

Sara Oliver says she witnessed “buckets of cash and checks” and was told they received about $700,000.   State Comptroller says they were delinquent in corporate filings in May of 2006, and has revoked their corporate charter.

Members explanation?

“Why? Because we’re just not responsible about doing it, I guess. I can’t answer that. I would like for someone to come and volunteer for us to do that work for us,” Peace House Board Member Kay Lucas said.

We’re dumb.

They produced non-specific budgets for 05 and 06, but when asked for specific receipts and paperwork, they had none.

Members say they have about $11,000 left in accounts.

“The IRS was asking us all these questions that I just did not know how to answer,” Lucas said.

That’s ok honey.  They’ll get their answers just the same.  They always do.

In Texas, if a corporate charter is forfeited, the directors of the organization can become personally liable for any debts incurred.

Including Director Cindy Sheehan.

DC District Court of Appeals – Guantanamo detainees cannot challenge their detention in US courts February 20, 2007

The 2-1 decision upholds a key provision of the Military Commissions Act which Bush asked Congress to pass to force their hand on bullshit complaints from Democrats that their detention is illegal to attack Bush and his prosecution of the war whether their status as enemy combatants can legally be challenged in US courts.

The two consenting judges ordered that hundreds of cases pending in the lower courts be dismissed.

Commenting on the prosecution’s arguments that the detainee’s deserve the same status as a US citizen, Judge A. Raymond Randolph wrote:

“The arguments are creative but not cogent. To accept them would be to defy the will of Congress,”

It will almost certainly be taken to the Supreme Court.  I recall Lincoln was able to suspend writs of habeus corpus, elmininating similar lawsuits filed by Conferate POWs seeking their release.  Interestingly (to me), the federal argument that was central to the war was “you are citizens of the United States, and the secessions are illegal.  Still, they were considered enemy combatants in the field, and had that status temporarily suspended in a time of war.
