Nissan.  Van Halen.  Retro.

I just love playing Michael Anthony’s bass riffs on this tune.

Hey Dave,

You’re a guitar aficionado, right? My husband and I want to buy my son an electric guitar for his 17th birthday. He’s been taking violin since the 4th grade, and recently started teaching himself how to play the acoustic guitar. He’s doing pretty well, too. Now he wants to upgrade to an Electric.
What would you recommend for a beginner in the say…$300 range?

I think you’re thinking right… don’t drop heavy dime until he shows you it’s more than an interest. Although anybody that’s stuck with the violin that long will stick with the guitar. It’s just too much damn fun.

Keep in mind you’ll need amplification too, so it’s not just the axe.

Plenty of good options here http://www.musiciansfriend.com

I have a relatively inexpensive Ibanez that I’m pretty happy with.

When my youngest expressed an interest we wound up agreeing on a Squire stratocaster. They actually sell a “starter-kit” with an amp and a gig bag. Squire is Fender’s bargain brand.

Call me crazy but I think you should involve him in the deal. Set a budget, shop around. Definitely go look at some and play them. We morons guitarists tend to develop close relationships with our guitars, and he will like the idea of being able to select a cool color or finish.

Don’t do it Deb! Remember when Dave made that comparison between playing guitar and making love to a woman? Don’t corrupt your angelic son!
