David Gilmour is not the best guy I ever heard play a Strat July 6, 2006

But his style is distinctive, all his own.

Well, what he does fits the song. Some guitar solos are a lot of impressive showing off, but it’s pretty much separate from the song.

The first time I heard that Danny Gatton character, I was listening to a public radio program and he was doing some live performance and was immitating all the famous guitarists. I can’t remember if people were calling out names for him to “do” or if he was choosing them. But just a few notes and you would think, “yea, that sounds like . . . ” Interesting how they have their own “voice.” A couple that come to mind that might not wow you, but seem to have their own sound and fit what they do well are Mark Knopfler and the U2 “Edge” character.

Of course, the “Apache” guy is pretty good, too.

Of course.

They are many that have signature sounds and styles, you know em as soon as you hear em. Knopfler used finger picking a lot and was incredibly versatile with it.

I agree, most Floyd stuff is built around the solo, and it fits. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it.

I love that song. Gilmour has gotten better since when this was done. Compare this one to the extended solo on the album “Pulse”. He really goes to town on that one. He also has a new album out this year – “On An Island”. It’s pretty good!

that was an interesting blast from the past. I used to love Floyd. I just think of them as “profesionally miserable” now. I’m none too keen on strats or strat players either. I suppose after Hendrix who is out there on his own, my favourite strameister would have to be Ritchie Blackmore, especially on the “Down to Earth” album he did with Rainbow.

Anyway thats enough guitar geeking.

Yeah, it’s gotta fit the song.
One of my favorite guitar solos is in the song It’s a Long Way There by Little River Band.
and Angry Eyes by Loggins and Messina
